Life as a Game of Chess

By Bruce Njovu

In a game of chess, there are pieces with general powers and pieces with a more superior power. There are kings, Queens, Rooks, Bishops and Knights and the small guy, the Pawn. The one nobody is afraid to sacrifice for the greater good of the board kingdom. Think of yourself as the Pawn. Life isn’t fair right?

There is a general misconception about the power of the little guy (you; the Pawn). There are two viewpoints in which you can choose to view your life;

  1. As the servant who is always on the spot and everyone wants to abuse and use you for their own gain. The black sheep and nobody appreciate your effort and struggles. They always throw you in deep end head first.
  2. As the pioneer of change. The king, the queen and all the powerful characters can ONLY move if you make the first move. The Pawn is the only piece with the capability of starting a movement of which the leaders can only command. Without your move, there are only useless unworkable commands with no actions. True power does not lie in the voice but the action. The leader can only be a leader, with more than one direction to run. The Pawn on the other hand, can only choose to move forward or not to move at all. Like many successful people, once you choose to move and you make it to the end of the board, you have no choice but to be something greater. That’s your only destiny…the greatness which only comes if you choose to move your path with a level of precision and wisdom.

Let’s bring it back to reality. Each human being has a different struggle and many of us tend to feel like a victim of circumstance. It could be school, work, personal relationships, you name it. We tend to feel left out so far that it may feel as though life stuck a little “Kick me” sticker on our backs. Regardless, you cannot demean your life by the starting point. You have with you, all you need to be greater. Don’t be afraid to make a few mistakes or smile a little more than necessary because the one thing that you have that nobody else has is you.

Your voice, your mind, your story, your vision. So write and draw and build and play and dance and live as only you can.
